Delusion

When we weren’t in Clarenville, we had our daily call from Shirley. Kate did nearly all the talking, but on one occasion, Shirley asked to speak with me. She said that she knew we couldn’t talk about the criminal case, but her lawyer in Pennsylvania, Anthony Mariani, wanted to speak with us.

I called District Attorney John Peck. Peck was surprised at Mariani’s involvement so early in the case, but saw no problem in my talking to him, so I called him.

Mariani said that, since we were cooperating so well with Shirley over Zachary’s care, he wondered if we were interested in helping fund a private investigator to dig into Andrew’s murder on Shirley’s behalf. And, perhaps we would like to help with getting her released on bail.

I was stunned. I wanted to say, “Sure. Release her on bail at about 35,000 feet.” Instead, I told him that I wasn’t smart enough to answer that without talking to a lawyer. He thought that was wise, and would have recommended it to his own client.

When we told Jackie about this, she couldn’t imagine what Mariani was up to, so gave him a call. They did a little verbal dancing, but Jackie learned nothing. We never discovered any hidden motive for this exchange, so we have to take it at face value. It seems likely that Shirley actually deluded herself into believing that our support for Zachary translated into support for her.
